Quick Review: Eagle Vale Shiraz 2008

Australia, Margaret River, Eagle Vale Shiraz 2008
++ // Smooth  // Jammy, Pepper, Green pepper // Blackberry, Chocolate, Cedar, Tabacco // Full

Smooth flavor, but with a lingering spiciness. Opened up to fruity, with a undertone of tobacco-y bitterness. Layers of flavor, but very drinkable.

Quick Review: Kaiken Ultra Malbec 2011

Argentina, Mendoza, Kaiken Ultra, Malbec 2011
+ // Smooth // Blueberry, Chocolate, Nutmeg, Cinnamon, Slate // Blueberry sauce, Nutmeg, Cinnamon, White pepper  // Full

Big nose, like a zinfandel. Deep purple color.
A "hot" wine. Goes in smooth, finishes with a bite.
Could stand to be aged in bottle a few years. At the least, decant for 30-45 minutes before drinking.

Quick Review: Madrona Vineyards Chardonnay 2012

US, CA, El Dorado, Madrona Vineyards Chardonnay 2012
++ // Smooth // Vanilla, Butter, Pear // Grapefruit, Pear, Honey, Orange rind // Full

A roller coaster of a wine. Big, bright acidic grapefruit to start bringing you to a great height of flavor, with a crest of of sweet pear and melon, with a plummeting drop of bitter orange rind bringing you home.

Quick Review: Bogle "Phantom" 2010

US, CA, Bogle "Phantom" 2010
+ // Smooth  // Chocolate, Leather, Cherry, Cloves, Nutmeg // Maraschino cherry, Leather, Pepper, Dark chocolate // Full

This is a Zinfandel. Whereas Italy has its Primitivo, California has the sister grape, the Zinfandel.

Quick Review: Cantele Primitivo 2001

Italy, Salento, Cantele Primitivo 2011
++ // Smooth // Blueberry jam, Petrol // Blueberries, Blueberry jam,Nutmeg, Black pepper // Med-full

We're liking Primitivo more and more. It's juicy, fruity, and luscious on the tongue. The fruit makes it taste "sweet," although it's technically not so sweet in terms of Residual Sugars.

Quick Review: Cinquante-Cinq Viognier

France, Languedoc, Cinquante-Cinq, Viognier, 2010
/ // Smooth // Lemon // Butter // Medium Bodied

Much less crisp than the nose (lemon) would suggest, the crispness does come out with rich tomato sauce, adding the perception of spicy-heat.

Quick Review: Gerard Bertrand Tautavel 2008

France, Sud de France, Gerard Bertrand Grand Terrior Tautavel 2008
+ // Smooth // Mushroom, Ink // Pearl, White Chocolate, Leather // Medium

A nice balance of flavors that cleansed the palate between bites.

Great winter white, mineral balances acidity. Mineral flavor is reminicent of salt. Almost effevescent.

Quick Review: Pedroncelli Cabernet Sauvignon 2010

US, CA, Dry Creek Valley, Pedroncelli "Three Vineyards" Cabernet Sauvignon 2010
+ // Smooth // Ripe blueberry, Black cherry, Black liquorice // Cherry jam, Oak, Black pepper, Leather // Full

Balanced well with spicy meatballs. We think it's more of a food wine than a sipping wine, try giving it a little time to breathe to really experience the complex flavors.

Decanted Pedroncelli Cabernet Sauvignon

Quick Review: Tenuta Ididini Nero D'Avola 2012

Italy, Sicili, Tenuta Ibidini Nero D'Avola 2012
+ // Fruity-Smooth // Cherry, Spice // Cherry, Bitter Chocolate // Light

This was the lighter, more drinkable wine from the two Nero D'Avola wines we sampled. It had lighter alcohol content and was a year younger than its counterpart.

Quick Review: Finger Lakes Tasting -Part 1

US, NY, Finger Lakes, Goose Watch Winery, Brut Rose
+ // Crisp // Candied Red apple, Cherries, Bread // Bread, Macoun Apples // Medium

A good starting wine, gets the taste buds flowing. Red fruit and fall flavors makes for a good cool weather wine. Made from Pinot Noir. The $18 price point makes this an exceptional deal for a sparkling wine.

US, NY, Finger Lakes, Glenora Wine Cellars, Brut 2003
++ // Smooth // Apricot, Peach // Nectarine // Medium-Full

Creamy with delicate bubbles. Maybe a hint of bitterness from the stems. The price point ($25) is slightly higher but another exceptional deal.

US, NY, Finger Lakes, Fox Run Vineyards Hedonia
+ // Sweet // Lemon // Lemon meringue, a hint of bitterness // Full

A big, grapey wine, but a undercurrent of other balancing flavors. The winery recommends you serve it like a fine whiskey - on the rocks. To be even more festive, add a slice of orange, lemon, or other citrus. This is a fortified wine made from the Traminette grape and comes in at 20% ABV. The price point is a surprise: $9.99 for a quality wine.

Quick Review: Castello di Amorosa Blind Test Glass Two

US, CA, Napa, Castello di Amorosa Chardonnay 2011
Nate: + // Smooth // Butter, Lemon, Hint of Maple wood // Wood, Smoke, Hay // Full
Almost herbaceous, which was unexpected in a Chardonnay.

Tina: ++ // Smooth // Funky, wet leaves, oak // Aged grapes, ash, smoke, tannins // Medium to Full
There was a funk here, which Tina enjoyed. Smoky, ashy, wet leaves, oak, the grapes were definitely aged. This is a rich and full Chardonnay.

Expected Results: The funk and tannins and the smokiness tricked us into thinking it was the more "complex" of the two wines we tasted. We both thought the winemaker had tried to give the wine some greater complexity, and that this was the 2011 Reserve Chardonnay.
Actual Results: 2011 Chardonnay
